12th Annual Writing Competition

 Submit your best fiction, creative non-fiction, or poetry to the 2013 VWS annual writing competition.

COMPETITION RULES:

Submission deadline: Entries to be postmarked not later than May 1st, 2013. Submit hard copy only. We do not accept electronic submissions. Mail to

Victoria Writers’ Society, Annual Writing Competition, P.O. Box 8311, Victoria, B.C. V8W 3R9. Entries will not be returned.

Covering letters: Note – your name should not appear on the manuscript.

Writers must accompany each entry with a covering letter noting the author’s name, the title of the entry, the genre of the entry, author’s mailing address and telephone number, and a brief (30 to 40 words) bio. Include your e-mail address if you wish to receive acknowledgement of receipt of your entry.

Entry fee: $15.00 per entry for VWS members / $20.00 per entry for non-members

Cheques payable to Victoria Writers’ Society for entry fees to accompany entries. Please note that we are not set up to receive electronic payments.

There is no limit to the number of entries a writer may submit, but an entry fee must be paid for each entry.

Format: Entries should be on letter-size paper (8 ½” x 11”), easily readable font such as Ariel 12 Pt, and double-spaced. Title of work should appear at top of each page.

Word count: Must be shown at top left-hand corner of 1st page of each submission.

2,500 words maximum for fiction and creative non-fiction.

40 lines for poetry

Eligibility: Work previously published or currently under consideration for publication elsewhere is not eligible to enter this competition.

Winners: Winners will be notified by August 21st, 2013, and will be invited to read their winning works at the VWS meeting Wednesday, September 4th, 2013. The winning works will be published in the December/13 edition of Island Writer magazine. Authors retain copyright after publication.
