How Ghost Stories Work—and Why
In this talk, Stephen Ross introduces the key structural elements of scary stories, linking them to aspects of human brain anatomy. He explains why scary stories remain scary even if we don’t believe them. He offers several examples of very short scary stories to demonstrate these features, and then invites his audience to try their hand at creating their own stories.
Stephen Ross is a Professor of English and Cultural, Social, and Political Thought at UVic. He is the author of two scholarly books and editor of a handful more. He is the Past-President of the Modernist Studies Association, and really likes books that make you work a bit. He has never seen a ghost, but would like to one day.
