Four local authors will join us to discuss Historical Fiction.
Claire Mulligan: Her published historical fiction includes two novels (The Reckoning of Boston Jim, The Dark) and short fiction. In 2017 she earned her masters in screenwriting from Uvic and her 2019 short film, The Still Life of Annika Myers, garnered multiple awards. Claire is currently at work on a collaborative project set in the 16th century with the artist Nick Bantock of Griffin & Sabine fame. Diana Jones: At the end of 2016 she published The Bearer’s Burden, a novel set in France during WW1. Her short stories have won several awards and she has recently completed a collection. She is at work on a second historical novel and is longing to get back to France to continue her research.
Liz Walker: Her first novel, The Dieppe Letters, received Crime Writers of Canada’s award for best unpublished manuscript in 2020. The Dieppe Letters is a mystery novel set in London, England, during World War II that examines whether the Germans knew in advance about the 1942 Dieppe Raid, which was the deadliest day for Canadians during the war. Her short fiction and poetry have appeared in literary journals, anthologies, and chapbooks.
Vanessa Winn: Her debut novel, The Chief Factor’s Daughter, was long-listed for The ReLit Awards, and was a finalist for Monday Magazine’s “Favourite Fiction” award. Her recently-released second novel, Trappings, depicts real people and events in 19th century British Columbia, during the aftermath of the gold rushes.
