Every year, the Victoria Writers’ Society hosts a writing competition to find the best original unpublished work from writers living on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. The contest has three categories: short fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry. Cash prizes are given for first and second place, gift certificates are awarded to two honourable mentions in each category. All winning entries are offered published in Island Writer magazine, the Victoria Writers’ Society literary journal.
ENTER THE VWS 2010 9th ANNUAL WRITING COMPETITION
This year’s writing contest will have three categories: short fiction, creative non-fiction, and poetry. Short stories and creative non-fiction must be less than 2,500 words. Poetry must be less than 48 lines in any style. The topic is open. Prizes are $100 for First, $50 for Second and a $30 Munro’s Books gift certificate for 2 Honourable Mentions in each category.
In addition, 1st and 2nd place winners will be invited to have their story or poem published in an upcoming 2010 issue of Island Writer magazine.
An entry may be one fiction piece, one nonfiction piece or two poems. There is no limit to the number of entries you may submit in any category but the fee is $15.00 per entry.
Deadline for the competition: May 01 2010
General Rules:
- Entrants must be residents of Vancouver Island or the Gulf Islands.
- Submissions must be original, currently unsubmitted, unaccepted and unpublished work
- Submissions must be typed or word-processed in a standard font type, double-spaced (prose), on 8.5 x 11 paper, single-sided with pages numbered and no staples. Entries must be in English.
Include with each entry a SEPARATE cover page giving your name, mailing address, email address, phone number, title(s) of entry, category of entry, date of entry, brief literary bio and an accurate word count.
To ensure blind judging, the title, but not the author’s name, must be at the top of each manuscript page. No revisions are permitted after submission. Entries will not be critiqued or returned.
Should an entry be published elsewhere before the winners are declared, the entrant must notify the contest organizers immediately.
