Camp Details
The Victoria Writers’ Society Summer E-Camp will run from
June 15 – August 10; with a wrap-up party one evening during the week of August 23-29th.
Up to ten writers in each of three genres (poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction) will have the opportunity to work on a one-on-one basis via email with a Writer-In-Residence in their chosen genre.
The Camp will go something like this:
June 15: participants will submit up to 10 pages (poets) or 3500 words (fiction and creative non-fiction writers) of their work to their respective Writers-In-Residence.
June 29: the W-I-Rs will return work to participants with thorough comments.
July 27: participants will return their revised work to their W-I-Rs (During the 4 weeks of revision time, participants will have the opportunity to correspond with their W-I-Rs via email)
August 10: W-I-Rs will return work to participants with comments.
Participants will then have time to make final touches to their work before the wrap-up party during the week of August 23-29, in which all participants will read from their work to one another.
COST:
$40 for VWS members
$70 for non-members (includes membership to the VWS)
**you are welcome to participate in more than one genre, but must pay the fee per genre**
Writers-In-Residence
POETRY: Garth Martens is a construction worker and poet who holds a MFA in Poetry from UVic, where he also teaches poetry workshops and seminars. His poetry has been broadcast on CBC radio and has appeared in Island Writer, Grain, The Fiddlehead (forthcoming), The Times Colonist, This Side of West, and Leonard Cohen: You’re Our Man, an international anthology. He is an editorial intern for The Malahat Review and a former assistant editor for All Rights Reserved. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Open Space Arts Society.(Please Note: The Poetry Section with Garth Martens is FULL)
FICTION: Daniel Griffin is a Victoria, BC-based writer. He has taught short fiction classes both at Camosun College and at The Victoria School of Writing. His short stories have appeared in numerous magazines and journals across North America. His work has twice appeared in the Journey Prize Anthology, (2004 and 2009 when he was a finalist for the $10,000 prize). His stories have been short-listed for the CBC Literary Award and are collected in the 2008 edition of Coming Attractions. He is currently at work on a novel and is completing his MFA in UBC’s optional residency program. (Please note: The Fiction Section with Daniel Griffin is FULL)
CREATIVE NON-FICTION: Alisa Gordaneer is a freelance writer, editor and poet who divides her time between Victoria and Vancouver.The former editor of Monday Magazine, she teaches writing at the University of British Columbia, Camosun College, the University of Victoria, and Royal Roads University. She also raises children and chickens, writes a regular arts column for Victoria’s Boulevard Magazine, and has written a poem a day since 2004. The recipient of numerous awards for her journalism and poetry, she’s currently working on a manuscript of poems about eating and food.
